Why is the Rolex Day-Date called the President?

The nickname comes from the three piece link bracelet introduced with it in 1956, which Rolex named the President. The bracelet name attached itself to the watch and never let go.

Is the Day-Date only available in gold or platinum?

Yes. Rolex has never made a steel Day-Date. Reference 228238 is 40mm in 18ct yellow gold, and that is part of why it reads as an arrival watch.

How much does a Rolex Day-Date 228238 cost?

It is priced against its gold content and its position at the top of the catalogue, and pre-owned examples with box and card sit meaningfully below unworn stock. We give you both numbers before you decide.

Does a diamond dial hurt resale value?

Factory set diamond dials from Rolex hold value well and are documented on the card. Aftermarket stone setting does the opposite and is very hard to sell. Provenance is everything here, and we check it.

Is the Day-Date too flashy for daily wear?

In yellow gold it announces itself. White gold or the black dial versions read far quieter. If you want the movement and the bracelet without the attention, that is the direction to go.
